1. All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders

All the Birds in the Sky is a witty and smart book, which blurs the boundaries between science-fiction and fantasy. The book tells us a story about childhood friends Laurence and Patricia and their untimely reunion during adulthood. One of them has learned magic and the other one is a mad-scientist and their actions would either save the world or doom the planet.

2. A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers

Chambers tells us the story about two protagonists in the novel: a genetically modified orphan and an artificial intelligence fit into a humanoid body who is trying to act human. Instead of pitting them against a space villain, Chambers tries to show us the growth of her two main characters throughout the novel.

3. The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin

Jemisin has already established herself as a fantasy writer, which was witnessed when she won the Hugo Prize for The Fifth Season. She continues her tale where magic meets science and creates a world which is set in the distant future.
